(Week 16) Trying To Capture the Greatness of God is like trying to Lasso the Moon

Recently, a sweet young “whippersnapper” who is a student at The Atlanta Dreamcenter School of Ministry asked me to paint her a painting for her dorm room.  One of the ironic things about that request is that she is one of the best artists I know. But this is a different story.

She truly is one of my heroes of faith and she is only in her 20s, proof that wisdom comes from God, not number of years.

I asked her,”What do you want me to paint, the size, colors etc…”

She came back with a quick response with the normal stuff, like:

-no bigger than a piece of paper

-earth tones

-Isaiah 40

BUT THEN THE ZINGER-

SHE ASKED ME TO PAINT THE GREATNESS OF GOD!

For the love of Pete, who in the world can do that?

So the search began!

I landed on the Message version of Isaiah 40:21-26

The Creator of All You Can See or Imagine

21-24 Have you not been paying attention? Have you not been listening?Haven’t you heard these stories all your life? Don’t you understand the foundation of all things?God sits high above the round ball of earth. The people look like mere ants.He stretches out the skies like a canvas— yes, like a tent canvas to live under. He ignores what all the princes say and do. The rulers of the earth count for nothing.Princes and rulers don’t amount to much. Like seeds barely rooted, just sprouted,They shrivel when God blows on them. Like flecks of chaff, they’re gone with the wind.

25-26 “So—who is like me? Who holds a candle to me?” says The Holy.Look at the night skies: Who do you think made all this?Who marches this army of stars out each night, counts them off, calls each by name—so magnificent! so powerful!— and never overlooks a single one?

I then began to research paintings that captured some of the imagery described in these verses.

Trying to Capture the Greatness of God is Like Trying to Lasso the Moon (Week 16) 2016

I am a bit obsessed withThe Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) so I painted my interpretation of them next to the moon of many colors!

au·ro·ra
əˈrôrə,ôˈrôrə/Submit
noun
noun: aurora borealis
1.
a natural electrical phenomenon characterized by the appearance of streamers of reddish or greenish light in the sky, usually near the northern or southern magnetic pole.

2.
literary
the dawn.

If I never get to see the Northern Lights in person, I will still get to check them off my bucket list; because sweet Jessica challenged me to paint her a picture of

THE GREATNESS OF GOD!

The word DAWN captured my attention and enabled me to see why the “aurora borealis” reminded me of the Greatness of God, as much as the human mind can relate:

Hosea 6:3 NASB

“So let us know, let us press on to know the Lord. His going forth is as certain as the

dawn;

And He will come to us like the rain, Like the spring rain watering the earth.”

In order to paint the GREATNESS OF GOD I had to immerse myself in what that meant.  In all my life I can honestly say, the time spent seeking God is the greatest treasure hunt anyone can embark on

because you are always promised gold:

**If you seek ME you will find ME if you seek me with all your heart!

**Draw near to ME and I will draw near to you!

So I sought and drew near asking a big ASK:

“Show me YOUR greatness, please!”

And GUESS WHAT?

HE DID:

Psalm 136:4
To Him who alone does great wonders, For His lovingkindness is everlasting;

Isaiah 55:9
“For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways And My thoughts than your thoughts.”

Jeremiah 10:6
There is none like You, O LORD; You are great, and great is Your name in might.

Luke 1:49
“For the Mighty One has done great things for me; And holy is His name.

Ephesians 3:20
Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us,

Ephesians 2:4
But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us,

1 John 3:1
See how great a love the Father has bestowed on us, that we would be called children of God; and such we are For this reason the world does not know us, because it did not know Him.

This is just a tiny glimpse of the Kaleidoscope of colors painting a picture of God’s greatness!

I pray this post wets your appetite for more and that you will go on the TREASURE HUNT of your life,

the only one that promises gold every time,

GOLD DIGGING IN GOD’S WORD!

*Maybe being  called a GOLD DIGGER  is not a bad thing after all!
