Rhymers for the Lord-Writing Assignment-“Paint a Picture with Words”

I have friends that have a ministry called Rhymers for the Lord.  They meet once a month to share what God has written on their hearts.  At each gathering they give out a rhyming assignment and people are give an opportunity to share their response.  New people are encouraged to share how they came to know the Lord, a favorite Bible verse and what it has meant to them or a piece of writing that God simply laid on their hearts.  And at the closing of the night anyone that feels lead to can freestyle, which is a style of rap in which lyrics are improvised, i.e. performed with no previously composed lyrics, and “off the top of their head”, or in this case “out of the depths of their heart”!

This month’s writing assignment was to paint a picture with words.  I am not going to be able to attend the  gathering his week so I thought I would share on my blog:)  Following my poetic response I will give a brief explanation of why God had me choose this topic!

SIGN

Looking at a canvas,

A message to convey.

Your hand plus a brush plus a story in your heart

The strokes are what you say!

The vision or the dream

Is birthed in your heart.

Only you and God can see it

from conception to the start!

Your hand plus a brush plus a canvas can create

A dance all their own

for us to celebrate!

BUT

Suppose there is no canvas or a brush

Just your hand and the dream.

Your ears and mouth are sleeping,

So it seems.

God’s message will come out,

The vision that HE birthed.

HE gives them to HIS children

So they can bless the earth!

We ask GOD for them all the time

And we see them on the road.

HIS language is universal:

SIGN

Just your hand and a thought,

Your ears and mouth watch the dance.

The canvas it the place you are,

Regardless of circumstance!

God does not make mistakes;

The deaf and the mute do speak.

Your gifted hands become HIS mouthpiece,

Sharing LIFE for all who seek!

We ask God for them all the time

And we see them on the road.

HIS language is universal:

SIGN

I chose this topic because I truly believe GOD is nudging me to learn sign language.  When I went to Brazil I was mesmerized by Portuguese and desperately wanted to learn it.  In Kenya my heart was primed to soak up Swahili and in Uganda I could not get enough of the Lugandan language.  I started to ask God why he gave me such a heart for language but yet I was not really learning any!  I started praying for God to give me a “sign”.  While on vacation, we struck up a conversation with the boat driver, who just happen to know “sign language” very well.  As I sat with my Bible and journal once again praying for God to “give me a sign about what language to learn”, I truly heard ,in my spirit, God say,”I already did- SIGN LANGUAGE!”

So, coming from someone who has 2 people in her home with hearing deficits I am choosing to be obedient and pursue some “sign language” classes.  If seems so obvious now but the journey to figure each step out is an end in itself!

Dear Lord,

Thank you for being patient with your children.  Thank you for speaking very specifically to each of us and thank you for the creativity you used as YOU breathed us into being!  Help me to hear YOU and help me to be obedient to what YOU say!  Thank you for the gift of writing!  You continually asked your prophets to write YOUR words on a scroll!  Thank you for the scroll of blogging!

GO GOD
